How do I remotely stop and start a server, my server is running Ubuntu which can use remote shell but as far as I know I cannot remote shell from the windows computer I want to connect to it from. How do other server admins deal with this?

SSH, or telnet if you use rkit.

Putty is NOT a connection method, it is a Windows client used to connect to servers utilizing the SSH protocol.

  7. He is asking for a windows client isn't he?
I obviously know that it's a client. Come on man, I've been hosting servers for over a year!

mmm, I thought he was looking for a alternate connection method, it seems that I didn't read it quite correctly. Never mind then, Putty + SSH is what OP is looking for.

ok, thanks, I've seen PuTTY used but I wasn't aware it could stop programs or close windows.

Yep....you can control your whole server that way.
